"We are winning, because on these terms, we cannot lose. The battlespace is Iraqi society, and Iraqi society cannot be won by what our enemy can offer. We win faster if we can make our alternative better, and we win faster if we can prove the enemy's inability to hold and govern territory -- the necessary condition for any sort of stability, without the hope of which the people of the Triangle will not support them."

But,

"The only remaining question is this: are we willing, as a society, to pay the price necessary to bring the victory about?"

So in the end, it seems to me that the main battlefield is not in Iraq, but at home...
