Eerste editie "Beneluberales" was groot succes (Vincent De Roeck)
Van woensdag 14 tot vrijdag 16 mei 2008 vond in het Europees Parlement te Brussel de allereerste editie plaats van “Beneluberales”, een driedaags discussiecongres van alle jongliberale organisaties uit de Benelux. Het thema was het nieuwe Benelux-verdrag dat in juni 2008 door alle betrokken landen onderschreven zou worden en de deur moet openzetten voor nauwere partnerschappen met regio’s zoals Noordrijn-Westfalen en Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
Dankzij de gulle hand van de ALDE-groep in het Europarlement konden een 70-tal deelnemers rekenen op gratis overnachtingen in een Brussels driesterrenhotel, gratis seminaries en lezingen, zowel in het Europees Parlement als in het VLD-partijgebouw, en gratis voedsel en drank via de befaamde Limburgse traiteur “Carpe Diem”. De drijvende krachten achter dit project waren Dries Holvoet (bureaulid van de Europese liberale jongerenkoepel LYMEC) en Jasper Pillen (ondervoorzitter van Jong VLD), en de reacties op dit congres waren unisono positief. Een tweede editie in Den Haag volgend jaar ligt dan ook zeker in de lijn der verwachtingen.
Speeches van Jan Van Run (VVD-statenlid in Noord-Holland), Bart Woord (secretaris-generaal van IFLRY), Bart Somers (VLD-partijvoorzitter), Aloys Rigaut (voorzitter van LYMEC) en Philippe De Backer (voorzitter van Jong VLD) werden afgewisseld met diepe discussies over de toekomst van de Benelux én de Europese Unie. De workshops werden geleid door Eurocraten en Europarlementsleden. Onder hen o.a. Annemie Neyts (EP-lid en voorzitster van de ELDR), Graham Watson (EP-lid, voorzitter van de ALDE-groep), Toine Manders (EP-lid voor de VVD), Magor Imre Csibi (EP-lid voor de PNL), Maarten Vidal (professor aan de K.U. Leuven), Dirk Sterckx (EP-lid voor Open Vld) en Eddy Baldewijns (de adjunct van de Benelux-secretaris-generaal).
Naar aloude liberale traditie brachten ook de avonden in Brussel een welgekomen verfrissing na de harde intellectuele arbeid van de dag en werd de Brusselse nachtclubscène door de Beneluberales-bende onveilig gemaakt. Het Beneluberales-congres is in Brussel dan ook zeker niet onopgemerkt voorbijgegaan. Wat hadden ze verwacht?

"First edition of Beneluberales was a great success"

Over 70 young liberals from Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg gathered in Brussels last week for a three-day congress on the new Benelux Treaty, which was completed by the working group on Friday 16th and will come into force after being signed by the Benelux countries’ political leaders in June 2008. This Benelux conference, unique within the European young liberal movement, was organised by Dries Holvoet, LYMEC bureau member, and Jasper Pillen, vice-president of Jong VLD, and was made possible by the ALDE group in the European Parliament and the ruling VLD party of Belgium, who both contributed financially and logistically to this successful endeavour.
The congress itself was held inside the European Parliament and the evening activities took place inside the VLD party HQ, a magnificent industrial heritage site in the historical centre of Brussels. The young liberal participants were enthusiastic about this conference and took part in the in-depth debates on the issue of Benelux cooperation, and many other interesting debates and workshops. The three-day congress was a perfect opportunity to meet other young liberal activists from neighbouring countries and to discuss the future of multilateralism with them.
The discussions were introduced and moderated by high-ranking officials like ALDE leader Graham Watson MEP, who stressed the importance of liberalism in a Europe dominated by collectivism and the belief in the make-ability of man, ELDR chairwoman Annemie Neyts MEP, who talked about the history of Benelux and reported as the main Belgian delegate in the Benelux commission on the new Treaty, Toine Manders MEP, who tried to tie liberal theory to practical solutions in the area of consumer protection, Dirk Sterckx MEP, who addressed the current state of affairs in the PR China and the difficult equilibrium between human rights and free trade, and notorious Belgian law professor Maarten Vidal, who sketched the future challenges of Benelux and other regional alliances within the EU.
Other keynote speakers include Thomas Lambert and Gerrit Sprit, two advisors to the Belgian State Department, Roger Chadwick, Renaldas Vaisbrodas and Marzocchi Ottavio, three ALDE policymakers, VLD party leader Bart Somers, LYMEC president Aloys Rigaut, IFLRY secretary-general Bart Woord, and Eddy Baldewijns, the Benelux deputy-secretary-general. So in brief, it was a wonderful social and intellectual experience for all participants, and nobody may hence wonder that the idea for a second Beneluberales congress next year in the Netherlands already arose as a continuation, and a silent tribute, to the success of this year’s edition. So to all organisers, participants and contributors, thank you for making this possible.
